The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced today that the El Niño phenomenon will continue to intensify before reaching its expected peak next December, warning that the current wave may be among the strongest recorded since 1950.
This natural phenomenon will lead to higher temperatures in large parts of the world, exacerbating the effects of human-induced climate change, FAO said.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said in its monthly update on the global seasonal climate, that the El Niño phenomenon will continue to intensify before reaching its expected peak in December 2026, reflecting the intensification of the El Niño phenomenon, which will lead to higher-than-average temperatures in large parts of the world, and increase the risk of drought and flooding in various regions.
It added that rising sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific are likely to lead to record levels during October, November and December 2026, reflecting the intensification of the El Niño phenomenon, which will affect weather patterns and affect economies, ecosystems and societies around the world.
These forecasts are based on a consensus between 13 models of the most prominent national and international meteorological centers.
El Niño causes water surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific to rise, causing changes in wind patterns, atmospheric pressure and precipitation around the world, usually occurring every two to seven years and lasting about nine to 12 months.
