Qatar has been working hard to ensure regional peace and security ever since the US-Iran conflict began earlier this month.

As the country enjoys strong bilateral relations with the US, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump, urging the need to reduce tensions and maintain the region’s security and stability.

HH the Amir also visited the Iranian capital, Tehran, to hold official talks with the Iranian President Dr Hassan Rouhani. During the talks, the two leaders recognized the need to resolve the crisis through dialogue. They also underlined the importance of making efforts to ensure regional security.

Complementing these efforts, His Excellency Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with the Iraqi leadership in Baghdad yesterday.

HE the Minister held official talks with Iraq's Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and also met with Iraqi President Dr Barham Salih.

During the meeting, the two parties reviewed Qatar-Iraq ties and exchanged views on developments in the region. They also discussed ways to ease regional tensions and maintain regional stability.

HE Sheikh Mohammed also met with the Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Karim to discuss bilateral relations, regional developments as well as consider efforts to assure the security of the region.

After the talks, the two officials participated in a joint press conference, where HE Sheikh Mohammed urged the importance of "de-escalation and distancing Iraq from any political struggles and escalations in the region."

He further highlighted the importance of respecting Iraq’s sovereignty, affirming Qatar’s support to the country and its people.

"Qatar seeks stability in Iraq so that the country can proceed towards growth, confirming that Qatar will continue to contribute to the growth and prosperity of Iraq,” HE the Minister said.

On his part, the Iraqi foreign minister called the visit of HE Sheikh Mohammed strategic and important, highlighting that both countries recognize the utmost importance of keeping calm and peace in the region.
