HH The Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani remains one of the defining figures in Qatar’s modern history. His journey from Doha to national leadership was shaped by education, military training, public service and a long path of responsibility that later helped guide Qatar through a period of major development.
HH The Father Amir was born in Doha in January 1952. He was raised in the city and completed his education there before continuing his military training abroad.
In 1971, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain, an important stage that shaped his early career and prepared him for future leadership roles in Qatar’s armed forces and government.
After returning to Qatar, Sheikh Hamad joined the Qatar Armed Forces and rose through the military ranks until reaching the rank of Major General. His years in the armed forces gave him direct experience in defence, planning and national security.
The Amiri Diwan credits HH The Father Amir with playing a pivotal role in developing the Qatar Armed Forces, particularly in terms of ordnance, military equipment and materiel. This reflected an early focus on strengthening national institutions and preparing them for the country’s future needs.
On May 31, 1977, Sheikh Hamad was named Heir Apparent and appointed Minister of Defence. This marked a major step in his public career and placed him at the centre of Qatar’s national planning and defence development.
His responsibilities expanded further on May 10, 1989, when he was appointed Chairman of the Supreme Council for Planning. The council was responsible for formulating Qatar’s social and economic policies, giving him a central role in shaping the country’s development direction before he assumed leadership.
On June 27, 1995, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani assumed power as Amir of the State of Qatar. His reign marked the beginning of a wide programme of development and reform that touched several areas of national life.
During his leadership, Qatar witnessed major progress in education, health, sport, culture, media, infrastructure, the economy and energy. His development plans also helped strengthen Qatar’s standing in the Arab and international community.
From his early years in Doha to his time at Sandhurst, his career in the armed forces and his later national leadership, the journey of HH The Father Amir reflects a life closely connected to the building of modern Qatar.
