The Council of the International Maritime Organization approved Doha’s hosting of World Maritime Day 2028 during its 137th regular meeting in London.
Marking the occasion, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United Kingdom and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the IMO, thanked member states for their confidence and support for the hosting request.
His Excellency stressed the keenness to organise a distinguished event that supports the goals of the IMO and strengthens international cooperation in the maritime sector.
He also welcomed the participation of member states and relevant parties in the international event, which will provide a platform for exchanging expertise and discussing key maritime issues.
World Maritime Day is held annually by the IMO in cooperation with the host country. The event brings together government officials, maritime sector leaders, representatives of international organisations, academic institutions and the private sector.
The event focuses on issues, challenges and future opportunities facing the global maritime sector. Its programme includes dialogue sessions and specialised presentations highlighting IMO priorities and emerging topics.
These discussions contribute to strengthening international cooperation, exchanging experiences and supporting efforts to develop maritime transport and promote maritime sustainability.
The hosting of World Maritime Day 2028 reflects continued support for the activities of the IMO and international cooperation in the maritime field, in line with efforts to develop the maritime sector and promote sustainability and innovation in maritime transport.
