Qatar has been elevated to sectoral dialogue partner status with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), marking an expansion of its engagement with the 11-member regional bloc.

The announcement was made at the conclusion of the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Pasay City, Philippines.

Qatar joins Germany as a new sectoral dialogue partner, while Türkiye has been admitted as ASEAN’s 12th dialogue partner.

Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro said Qatar’s new status reflects its expanding engagement with ASEAN in diplomacy, development cooperation and humanitarian assistance, among other areas.

“This development demonstrates the continued confidence of our partners in ASEAN,” Lazaro said, adding that it supports the aspirations set out in the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.

ASEAN grants external states formal partnership categories including dialogue partner, sectoral dialogue partner and development partner. Sectoral dialogue partner status provides a framework for cooperation in agreed priority areas between ASEAN and its external partners.

The development further strengthens Qatar’s ties with Southeast Asia, a region comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
