Metro, Tram or Taxi: What's the Best Way to Get Around Doha?

Getting around Doha does not always mean getting behind the wheel. Whether you are heading to work, meeting friends, visiting an attraction or running errands, the city's Metro, tram and taxi services offer different ways to reach your destination without driving.

But which option makes the most sense for your journey? The answer depends on where you are going, how far you need to travel and whether convenience, cost or flexibility matters most.

Doha Metro: Best for Affordable Travel Across the City

For journeys between major areas of Doha, the Metro is often the most practical starting point. Its three lines, Red, Green and Gold, connect important residential, commercial, educational and leisure destinations, with all three meeting at Msheireb Station.

The Red Line connects areas including Al Wakra, Hamad International Airport, West Bay, Katara and Lusail. The Green Line serves destinations such as Education City, Qatar National Library and Mall of Qatar, while the Gold Line provides access to Souq Waqif, the National Museum of Qatar and Al Aziziyah.

Cost is one of the Metro's biggest advantages. Standard travel costs QAR 2 per journey, while the daily fare cap for standard reusable travel cards is QAR 6. This makes it particularly useful for anyone planning multiple stops throughout the day. The initial purchase of a reusable travel card is a separate cost.

Another advantage is predictability. Travelling by Metro allows passengers to avoid road congestion, although the overall journey may still involve walking or using connecting transport to reach the final destination.

Best for: Regular commutes, longer journeys between Metro-connected areas, budget-friendly outings and trips involving several destinations.

Trams: Best for Exploring Individual Districts

While the Metro connects different parts of the city, tram services are designed to make shorter journeys within particular districts easier.

In Msheireb Downtown Doha, the free Msheireb Tram connects key areas of the neighbourhood, including destinations near Msheireb Museums, shops, restaurants and cultural attractions. It is particularly useful when exploring the district without repeatedly returning to a car.

Education City also operates a free tram network connecting destinations across its campus. Visitors can combine a Metro journey on the Green Line with the tram to explore attractions and facilities within Education City.

Lusail Tram connects with the Doha Metro and uses the same travel card and fare system. However, improvement works have affected services during 2026. Following the suspension of surface-level routes, services have been operating on a restricted section between Legtaifiya and Tarfat South. Passengers should check Qatar Rail's latest service information before planning journeys to other Lusail destinations.

Best for: Moving between attractions within Msheireb or Education City, and reaching currently served destinations on the Lusail Tram network.

Taxis: Best for Door-to-Door Convenience

Public transport does not reach every doorstep, and sometimes the final part of a journey is the most inconvenient. That is where taxis become particularly useful.

Karwa taxis can be booked through the Karwa Taxi app, while ride-hailing services such as Uber provide another option for travelling directly between locations.

A taxi may be the more convenient choice when carrying shopping, travelling with luggage, visiting somewhere far from a Metro station or heading out when the weather makes a longer walk uncomfortable.

Unlike the Metro's standard fixed journey fare, taxi costs depend on the journey and service used. Checking the applicable fare or estimate before booking is a sensible way to manage transport spending.

Best for: Door-to-door journeys, destinations without convenient public transport connections, travelling with belongings and completing the final stretch of a trip.

Combining Different Transport Options

Getting around without a car does not mean relying on just one form of transport. Often, the most convenient approach is to combine them.

For example, you could take the Metro to Msheireb, explore the surrounding streets on foot, use the free Msheireb Tram and continue walking towards Souq Waqif. For a destination farther from the rail network, a connecting bus or short taxi journey may complete the trip.

Metrolink feeder buses also connect selected neighbourhoods with Metro stations. Depending on the area, eligible passengers may be able to use metroexpress shared transport services for the first or final part of their journey.

Before setting off, check the latest routes and operating hours through Qatar Rail's official channels or the relevant transport app. This is especially important for Friday journeys, special events and routes affected by temporary service changes.

So, Which Option Should You Choose?

Choose the Metro when you want affordable travel between well-connected parts of Doha. Choose the tram when you are exploring a district served by an operating tram route. Choose a taxi when convenience, flexibility or direct access matters more.

For many journeys, the best choice is not one over the others, but a combination of all three. With a little planning, you can spend less time worrying about driving and parking and more time enjoying what Doha has to offer.
