Qatar Bank Account for Expats: Documents & Time

Just moved to Qatar and need a local bank account?

For most expatriate residents, opening an account becomes much easier once you have your Qatar ID (QID). Depending on the bank and account type, you may also need your passport, employment or salary information, Qatar address details and tax-residency information.

Some banks now allow the entire process to be completed through their mobile apps, while others still offer branch-based opening.

The important point is that there is no single document list, minimum salary or processing time that applies to every bank in Qatar.

Here is what expats should know in 2026.

What do you normally need to open an account?

For a resident expatriate, the core identification documents are usually:

A valid Qatar ID and passport.

Beyond those, the bank may ask for:

Employment or salary evidence, particularly for a current or salary account.

Qatar residence-address information, which may be entered digitally or supported by an address document depending on the bank.

Tax-residency details, as part of the bank's KYC, FATCA and CRS checks.

Individual banks can request additional documents depending on your nationality, employer, account type and customer profile.

Do not tell every reader that a tenancy contract, utility bill, NOC and passport photos are universally required. Those requirements vary considerably.

Do you need a QID?

For most normal resident banking products, a valid QID is the standard requirement.

For example, Qatar Islamic Bank says new expatriate residents opening an account should have:

Valid QID, passport and employment contract or salary certificate.

QIB's digital onboarding also scans the QID and passport and verifies the applicant using a selfie.

However, there is an important exception.

QNB allows some newcomers to start before the QID arrives

QNB currently states that a newcomer without a QID can open a current account, but must provide the QID to the bank within:

90 days

Otherwise, the account will be blocked in accordance with the bank's stated Qatar Central Bank requirements.

QNB also has a pre-arrival temporary-account process requiring documents such as a passport copy, job offer and Qatar visa. The temporary account has restrictions until the customer arrives and completes the bank's requirements.

So the accurate advice is:

A QID is normally required, but some banks have specific newcomer or pre-arrival processes that allow you to start earlier.

Do not assume every bank does this.

Do you need a salary certificate?

It depends on the account and bank.

QIB requires salary or employment information for its current-account onboarding.

Dukhan Bank's current-account requirements for expatriates include an original passport with valid work permit/residence, QID, salary-transfer letter and employer introduction letter.

QNB's standard current-account FAQ, however, lists only an original passport and QID as the core documents for the account itself.

So avoid saying every expat must bring a salary-transfer letter.

A better rule is:

Salaried current accounts frequently require employment or income evidence, but requirements differ by bank.

Do you need proof of your Qatar address?

Banks must collect residence information as part of customer due diligence, but the evidence they ask for differs.

QNB's digital onboarding currently lists proof of address among its requirements, alongside QID/passport, proof of income for a current account and tax-residency details.

QIB asks customers to enter their residence information during digital onboarding.

That does not mean every customer at every bank must bring a Kahramaa bill or tenancy contract.

Check the bank's current document list before visiting.

Current account or savings account?

Current account

A current account is generally designed for everyday transactions and, at many banks, salary payments.

It typically gives you access to services such as:

Debit card

ATM withdrawals

Transfers

Bill payments

Online and mobile banking

Cheque-book facilities where offered

Salary transfer may be important for certain account packages, credit cards, loans or other benefits, but it is not correct to say that every current account in Qatar universally requires a QAR 4,000 salary.

Savings account

A savings account can be useful where you want to keep funds separately or earn a return under the relevant product conditions.

Savings-account eligibility and minimum-balance rules vary considerably.

I would remove the claim that a savings account generally requires either a QAR 4,000 salary or QAR 10,000 deposited for 60 days. I could not verify that as a Qatar-wide current rule.

Is there a minimum salary to open a bank account?

There is no single minimum salary applying across all Qatar banks.

For example:

QNB says its standard current account has no minimum balance and no monthly account charge.

Ahlibank currently says customers assigning a salary of QAR 6,000 or more to its current account do not need to maintain a minimum balance.

Commercial Bank has used QAR 4,000 as a qualifying salary threshold in current salary-customer promotions, but that does not turn QAR 4,000 into a nationwide legal minimum for opening an account.

The practical advice is:

Check the eligibility requirements for the exact bank and account you want.

Salary thresholds often matter more for particular banking packages, loans and cards than for the basic legal ability to hold an account.

How much does it cost to open an account?

Do not assume every account has exactly the same fee structure.

Several mainstream accounts have no monthly maintenance or minimum-balance fee under their stated conditions.

Qatar Central Bank's published limits are particularly useful here.

For personal current and savings accounts, the QCB schedule states:

Active account minimum-balance commission: Nil

The QAR 10 figure sometimes quoted online applies instead to:

A dormant account with less than QAR 500

or the equivalent in foreign currency.

Commercial Bank's current 2026 tariff follows the same distinction, showing no minimum-balance account maintenance fee and QAR 10 for qualifying dormant accounts below QAR 500.

So remove:

“QAR 10 if an active account drops below QAR 500.”

That is incorrect.

Can you open a bank account online?

Yes, at several banks.

QNB

QNB's digital onboarding allows eligible new customers to open a current or savings account through the mobile app.

The bank says the account can be created within a few minutes, with a virtual debit card available for immediate use.

Eligibility currently includes being over 18, being a Qatari citizen or resident and having an eligible Qatar mobile number.

QIB

QIB also offers fully digital account opening.

Applicants enter their QID and mobile number, scan their identification, complete facial verification, provide their information, tax declaration and signature, and can request debit-card delivery.

QIB says its application review is completed within approximately:

24–48 hours

although some parts of the digital onboarding journey itself take only minutes to complete.

Commercial Bank has also continued expanding digital onboarding and instant account fulfilment for retail customers.

How long does it take to open a bank account?

I would remove the blanket:

“3–5 working days at a branch.”

There is no single standard processing period across Qatar's banks.

The actual time depends on:

Bank

Account type

Digital vs branch application

Document completeness

KYC and compliance checks

Employer verification where relevant

QNB advertises digital account creation within minutes for eligible customers.

QIB says its digital application is processed in approximately 24–48 hours.

A branch application can therefore be completed quickly in a straightforward case or take longer if additional documentation or compliance review is required.

For a guide, use:

Digital applications at some banks can be opened or submitted within minutes, while full approval may take from the same day to several working days depending on the bank and compliance checks.

How to open an account

Start by choosing the bank and exact account type you need.

Check the bank's official eligibility and documents page rather than relying on a generic list.

Have your valid QID and passport ready. Prepare salary or employment evidence if required and be ready to provide your residence and tax-residency details.

You can then apply through the bank's mobile app, online onboarding system or a branch, depending on the product.

Complete the bank's identity and KYC checks.

Once the account is approved, you will receive your account details or IBAN and can arrange debit-card activation or delivery according to the bank's process.

What happens when your QID expires?

Banks are required to maintain up-to-date customer-identification and KYC information.

That means you should update the bank after renewing your QID rather than leaving expired identity documents on your profile.

QNB, for example, allows customers to update an expired QID directly through its mobile banking app under the profile/QID update service.

QIB also allows customers to upload and update documents including QID, passport and salary certificate through its mobile app so banking services can continue without interruption.

Whether and when specific functions are restricted because of expired documents depends on the bank and regulatory requirements, so avoid saying every account is automatically frozen the moment the QID expires.

The best advice is:

Renew the QID and update your bank records promptly.

Metrash or Metrash2?

Use the current Metrash app.

The old Metrash2 application was discontinued on 1 March 2025.

Your residency and QID are government matters handled through the Ministry of Interior's services.

Opening the bank account itself is done through the bank, not through Metrash or Hukoomi.

FAQs

Can I open a bank account in Qatar without a QID?

Usually, a valid QID is required for a normal resident account.

However, QNB currently offers a newcomer process that allows an account to be opened before the QID is issued, provided the QID is submitted within 90 days. Other banks may have different policies.

What documents do expats normally need?

A valid QID and passport are the core documents.

Depending on the bank and account, you may also need salary or employment evidence, Qatar address information and tax-residency details.

Is QAR 4,000 the minimum salary to open an account?

No.

There is no universal QAR 4,000 minimum across Qatar's banks.

Eligibility depends on the bank and product.

How long does account opening take?

It varies.

QNB advertises digital opening within minutes for eligible customers, while QIB says its digital onboarding application can take around 24–48 hours to process.

Branch and higher-risk applications may take longer.

Can I open an account online?

Yes.

Banks including QNB and QIB currently offer digital account-opening journeys for eligible Qatar residents.

Is there a QAR 10 fee if my active balance falls below QAR 500?

No.

The QCB fee schedule lists nil commission for an active current or savings account's minimum balance.

The QAR 10 fee relates to a qualifying dormant account with less than QAR 500.

What happens when my QID expires?

Update it with your bank as soon as it is renewed.

QNB and QIB both provide digital ways to update identification documents through their apps.

Should I use Metrash2 to renew my QID?

No.

Metrash2 was discontinued in March 2025. Use the current Metrash app or the applicable MOI service instead.
