What sponsorship in Qatar actually involves
For an employer, the key company record is the Establishment ID, sometimes called the establishment card or computer card. It identifies the company and its authorised signatories in the Ministry of Interior’s system.
The Establishment ID allows the company to access immigration and residency services. However, the company must also receive the necessary labour approvals before recruiting employees and applying for their work visas.
A resident sponsoring family members does not need to create a separate establishment file. Family residence and visit applications are submitted under the sponsor’s QID, subject to the sponsor’s profession, salary, housing and family relationship.
Family residence is intended for eligible dependants living in Qatar. A family visit visa is a temporary entry route and follows different salary, duration and extension rules.
Who needs to open one?
Employers and companies
A company planning to recruit expatriate employees needs:
- A valid Commercial Registration
- A valid commercial licence
- An Establishment ID from the Ministry of Interior
- Registered authorised signatories
- The necessary Ministry of Labour recruitment and work-permit approvals
The Establishment ID allows the company to use relevant immigration services, but it does not automatically give the business permission to recruit any number or category of workers.
Individual and family sponsors
Residents may apply to sponsor eligible family members if they meet the Ministry of Interior’s conditions.
For private-sector employees, the current family residence conditions generally require:
- A technical or specialised non-labour profession recorded in the employment contract
- A monthly salary of at least QAR 10,000; or
- A monthly salary of at least QAR 6,000 with family housing provided by the employer and recorded in the employment contract
Government and semi-government employees must provide an employment contract or official employer letter confirming their profession and salary. They must have employer-provided family housing or meet the applicable salary requirement.
For family residence applications:
- Male children must not be older than 25
- Daughters must be unmarried
- Family members must have health insurance covering their stay
- Family members aged 18 and above must provide a police clearance certificate
- Children aged 6 to 18 must be enrolled in a licensed school in Qatar or provide proof of education outside Qatar through the relevant Ministry of Education and Higher Education platform
For a family visit visa, the resident generally needs a non-labour profession, a salary of at least QAR 5,000 and approved family housing. The visitor must be within an eligible degree of relationship and have health insurance covering the visit.

- Proof of family housing where required
- A police clearance certificate for each family member aged 18 and above

Documents issued outside Qatar must carry the required attestations from the issuing country and the relevant diplomatic authorities before being attested by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
An Arabic translation may be requested when the original document is in another language.
Step-by-step: completing the process
Confirm the correct route. A company should ensure that its Commercial Registration and commercial licence are valid. A family sponsor should first confirm that their profession, salary, housing and relationship meet the current conditions.
Prepare and attest the documents. Complete any required attestation for marriage, birth, education or police clearance documents before submitting the application.
Complete the company or family application. Companies apply for the Establishment ID using the Ministry of Interior’s services. Residents submit family residence or family visit applications through Metrash.
Obtain the necessary approval. Employers must complete the Ministry of Labour and work-visa requirements for each employee. Family sponsors must wait for the Ministry of Interior to approve the family application.
Complete entry, insurance and medical requirements. After entering Qatar on a residence visa, the sponsored person must complete the required medical examination within 30 days. Health insurance must cover the required period.
Complete biometrics and issue the QID. Once the medical and fingerprinting requirements are complete, the sponsor can proceed with the residence permit and QID application.
Applications and residence-permit status can be tracked through Metrash or the Ministry of Interior’s inquiry services.
Realistic timeline
There is no single processing period covering company establishment records, work visas, family visits and family residence applications.
The timing depends on:
- Whether the company’s registration and labour approvals are active
- Whether the family sponsor meets the salary, profession and housing conditions
- Whether documents have been correctly attested
- Whether additional security or eligibility checks are required
- How quickly the medical examination and biometrics are completed
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs normally reviews an online document-attestation request within one working day. Payment, document collection, overseas verification and Qatar Post delivery can add more time.
A family visit visa is initially issued for one month. First-degree relatives may be eligible for extensions of up to five additional months, subject to the applicable requirements. A medical examination is required when extending a family visit beyond the initial period.
For residence applications, the sponsored person must complete the medical examination within 30 days of entering Qatar on the residence visa.
Do not book non-refundable travel or make final arrangements until the relevant visa has been approved.
