Qatar’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) reached 103.31 points in August, rising by 0.52 percent compared with the preceding month.
The National Planning Council said in a statement issued today that, amid continuing regional challenges and pressure on supply chains and transportation and logistics costs, the increase was mainly attributable to a 7.06 percent rise in the Recreation, Sport and Culture group. The data showed that prices remained at their July levels in five main groups—Health, Education Services, Information and Communication, Insurance and Financial Services, and Tobacco and Beverages—while Transport fell by 0.53 percent and Clothing and Footwear declined by 2.26 percent.
Six groups recorded month-on-month increases, led by Recreation, Sport and Culture at 7.06 percent, Personal Care, Social Protection and Miscellaneous Goods and Services at 0.85 percent, and Restaurants and Accommodation Services at 0.47 percent.
Beginning in July 2026, the CPI adopted an enhanced methodology as part of the National Planning Council’s continuing efforts to strengthen the quality and reliability of price statistics in line with international best practices. The index is now published using 2024 as the base year (2024=100), replacing 2018 (2018=100), with the adoption of the Classification of Individual Consumption According to Purpose 2018 (COICOP 2018), an updated basket of goods and services, and revised expenditure weights based on the 2023/2024 Household Income and Expenditure Survey.
The statement noted that these improvements allow the index to better reflect current household spending patterns and provide a more accurate measure of inflation in Qatar.
