Qatar participated on Saturday in an international conference on Jerusalem held in Cairo, Egypt, which focused on the challenges facing Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem.
The conference, titled “Jerusalem: The Frontline of Displacement and Annexation and the Key to Achieving a Just and Lasting Peace,” was organised by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in cooperation with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
Qatar’s delegation was headed by Minister Plenipotentiary Maryam bint Ahmed Al Shibi, Deputy Ambassador of Qatar to Egypt and Deputy Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States.
Discussions focused on protecting Jerusalem’s unique multi-religious character and preserving its importance as a symbol of coexistence.
Participants examined the displacement, dispossession and violence affecting Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, placing these challenges within the wider context of the occupied Palestinian territory.
The conference stressed the importance of protecting Jerusalem, preserving the existing historical and legal status quo, and supporting Palestinian rights, presence and sovereignty in the city.
It also highlighted restrictions on freedom of worship, threats to holy sites and the effects of Israeli policies, including settlement expansion, on Jerusalem’s identity and its Palestinian population.
Participants reaffirmed that the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem remains essential to achieving peace, stability and interfaith coexistence.
The conference also emphasised the international community’s responsibilities under international law to preserve the city’s cultural and religious character.
Its programme included two panel discussions involving religious leaders, policymakers and experts.
The sessions addressed the protection of the holy city and its historical status quo, as well as ways to preserve Palestinian rights, presence and sovereignty in Jerusalem and the occupied Palestinian territory in the face of displacement policies and illegal settlement expansion.
