The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts to strengthen the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, stressing that eliminating chemical weapons is essential to enhancing global peace and security.
The statement was delivered by H.E. Dr. Mutlaq bin Majid Al-Qahtani, Qatar's Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), during the 112th Session of the OPCW Executive Council held at the organisation's headquarters in The Hague.
During his address, Ambassador Al-Qahtani reiterated Qatar's support for the OPCW's work in promoting compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention and strengthening international cooperation to prevent the use of chemical weapons.
He also expressed Qatar's concern over the continuing humanitarian crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories, the ongoing Israeli military actions in Lebanon, and the humanitarian and security consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war.
Qatar stressed the importance of seriously investigating any allegations involving the use or threat of chemical weapons and ensuring those responsible are held accountable in accordance with international law.
The ambassador also welcomed the continued cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the OPCW's Technical Secretariat, expressing hope that Syria's progress would enable it to regain its rights and privileges within the organisation, thereby contributing to regional security and reinforcing the OPCW's credibility.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Al-Qahtani reaffirmed Qatar's longstanding position that dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful settlement of disputes remain the most effective means of preserving international peace and security, while underscoring the need to uphold international law and prevent the use or threat of chemical weapons under any circumstances.
