Qatar’s National Sport Day 2027 to take place during Ramadan for the first time

Qatar has revealed more details for National Sport Day 2027, which will take place during Ramadan for the first time.

Scheduled for Tuesday, February 9, 2027, the upcoming edition will be held under the theme “Ramadan… A Golden Opportunity”, with activities divided into two periods to suit the rhythms of the fasting day.

The new schedule places lighter physical activities before Iftar, while more intensive sports are planned after Taraweeh prayers.

What time are National Sport Day activities?

The programme has been divided into two main periods.

Before Iftar: 3 PM to 5 PM

The first period will focus on lighter activities suitable for the hours before breaking the fast.

Planned activities include:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Cycling
  • Bodyweight exercises
  • Low-intensity exercise

The focus on lower-intensity movement reflects the need to manage physical activity carefully while fasting.

After Taraweeh: 9 PM to 11:30 PM

The second period will take place after Taraweeh prayers, when participants will be able to take part in more active sports.

Activities include:

  • Running
  • Football
  • Volleyball
  • Group games
  • Moderate-to-high-intensity exercise

This gives residents the option to take part in more physically demanding activities later in the evening after Iftar and prayers.

A first for Qatar’s National Sport Day

Qatar marks National Sport Day on the second Tuesday of February each year, placing the 2027 edition on February 9.

With Ramadan expected to begin around the same period, the 2027 celebration will become the first National Sport Day held during the holy month.

The official campaign theme, “Ramadan… A Golden Opportunity,” reflects the idea that Ramadan can also be an opportunity to maintain healthy routines and make physical activity part of daily life.

Why split activities into two periods?

The schedule effectively recognises that exercise needs can differ before and after Iftar.

Before Iftar, the programme prioritises walking, cycling and other lower-intensity movements.

After Taraweeh, the programme shifts towards running, team sports and more demanding exercise, when participants have had an opportunity to eat and hydrate.

This makes the 2027 edition notably different from previous National Sport Days, when activities were generally concentrated throughout the daytime.

What usually happens on National Sport Day?

National Sport Day brings together ministries, government entities, private companies, sporting organisations and community groups for activities across Qatar.

Events typically include walking, running, cycling, fitness sessions, football and other recreational sports, with programmes designed for different ages and fitness levels.

The initiative aims to encourage residents to make exercise a regular part of everyday life rather than limiting physical activity to one annual event.
