Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality has approved new regulations for the subdivision of farms, reducing the minimum area of a subdivided farm from 100,000 square metres to 50,000 square metres.
The change gives farm owners greater flexibility in dividing their agricultural land while maintaining controls aimed at protecting agricultural resources and groundwater.
According to the Ministry, the new regulations are intended to improve the efficient use of available agricultural land and create additional opportunities for agricultural investment.
What has changed?
Under the previous requirement referenced by the Ministry, a farm resulting from a subdivision had to have a minimum area of 100,000 square metres.
The new regulations reduce this threshold to:
50,000 square metres per subdivided farm.
This represents a 50% reduction in the minimum resulting farm area.
The Ministry said the updated rules will allow farm owners to make better use of available land and provide greater flexibility when dividing existing farms.
Why is Qatar changing the rules?
The Ministry highlighted several objectives behind the new regulations, including:
- encouraging more efficient use of agricultural land;
- protecting groundwater resources;
- expanding agricultural investment opportunities;
- supporting small and medium-sized agricultural projects; and
- strengthening Qatar’s food security.
The Ministry said the regulations seek to balance greater agricultural activity with the sustainable management of natural resources.
Does every farm now qualify for subdivision?
The Ministry’s announcement confirms the new 50,000 sqm minimum resulting area, but it does not set out the complete eligibility criteria, application requirements or other technical conditions that may apply to individual farms.
Farm owners should therefore check the applicable Ministry of Municipality requirements before proceeding with a subdivision application rather than assuming that meeting the 50,000 sqm threshold alone guarantees approval.
The Ministry said the change supports Qatar National Vision 2030 by encouraging more productive farms, greater agricultural self-sufficiency and sustainable management of the country’s natural resources.
