Argentina produced one of the most dramatic comebacks of the World Cup 2026 to snatch victory from Egypt, while Switzerland held their nerve in a penalty shootout against Colombia as the final two quarterfinal spots were decided on Tuesday, July 7.

The results completed the last-eight lineup, with Argentina set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

Argentina stun Egypt 3-2

Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in their World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash at the Atlanta Stadium.

Egypt looked on course for one of the tournament’s biggest upsets after Yasser Ibrahim headed the Pharaohs into an early lead (15th minute) before Mostafa Zico doubled the advantage in the 67th.

Goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir also delivered a string of outstanding saves, including denying Lionel Messi from the penalty spot in the first half, as Argentina’s title defence appeared to be slipping away.

However, the defending champions mounted a stunning fightback in the closing stages. Cristian Romero (79th) headed home before Messi levelled four minutes later.

Enzo Fernandez then completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time winner (90+2) to send Argentina into the quarterfinals. Despite a courageous display, Egypt bowed out after coming agonisingly close to a famous victory.

Switzerland edges Colombia on penalties

Switzerland booked their place in the quarterfinals after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time at the BC Place in Vancouver, Canada.

Neither side could find the breakthrough over 120 minutes in a closely contested encounter. Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made several key saves during the match and then emerged as the hero in the shootout.

Granit Xhaka, Zeki Amdouni, Cedric Itten, and Ruben Vargas converted from the spot for Switzerland, while Manuel Akanji missed.

For Colombia, Juan Quintero, Jaminton Campaz, and Luis Díaz scored their penalties, but misses from Davinson Sánchez and Cucho Hernández proved costly as Switzerland secured a place in the quarterfinals against Argentina.
