Asian Games: Six Weightlifting World Records Set

Six new weightlifting world records were set in the men’s 70kg and 75kg categories at the 20th Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya 2026, currently taking place in Japan and continuing until October 4. The results raised the total number of records set at the Games to 15.

In the men’s 70kg category, North Korean weightlifter Ri Won Ju won the gold medal, his country’s fifth gold from the seven categories contested so far. He set two world records by lifting 198kg in the clean and jerk and recording a total of 349kg after lifting 151kg in the snatch.

Japanese weightlifter Masanori Miyamoto set a new world record in the snatch with a lift of 154kg. However, he had to settle for the silver medal with a total of 342kg after lifting 188kg in the clean and jerk.

Filipino weightlifter Delos Santos Albert Ian won the bronze medal with a total of 324kg after lifting 141kg in the snatch and 183kg in the clean and jerk.

In the men’s 75kg category, Indonesian weightlifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah secured his second consecutive Asian Games gold medal and set two world records. He lifted 206kg in the clean and jerk and recorded a total of 366kg, having lifted 160kg in the snatch.

Abdullah previously won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games three years ago, with both medals coming in the 73kg category.

North Korean weightlifter Ri Chong Song, who won gold in the 81kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, set a world record in the snatch with a lift of 162kg. However, he finished with the bronze medal after recording a total of 357kg. He failed in his final two clean-and-jerk attempts and had to rely on his successful first attempt of 195kg.

Thai weightlifter Weeraphon Wichuma, who won silver in the 73kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, benefited from Song’s failure to improve his clean-and-jerk result. Wichuma moved into second place and claimed the silver medal with a total of 365kg, comprising 160kg in the snatch and 205kg in the clean and jerk.

The weightlifting competition is scheduled to continue on Sunday with the men’s 110kg qualifiers and the women’s 69kg and 77kg finals.

North Korea leads the overall weightlifting standings after eight categories, with eight medals comprising five gold, two silver and one bronze.

China is second with four medals, comprising two gold and two silver, while Indonesia occupies third place with two medals, comprising one gold and one bronze.
