Qatar allows a Commercial Registration and Commercial Permit to be renewed for a period of one to five years, depending on the duration you select. For a one-year CR renewal with one main business activity, the current Ministry of Commerce and Industry fee is QAR 500, following the major reduction in government service fees introduced in 2024.

What is a Commercial Registration (CR) in Qatar?
A Commercial Registration is the official registration of a business in Qatar's Commercial Registry.
It records core information about the establishment, including details such as:
- Trade name
- Legal structure
- Business activities
- Owners or partners
- Capital
- Managers and authorised parties
- Branches and other registered information
Qatar's Commercial Registry Law states that a person or legal entity may not engage in trade or establish a commercial business without being entered in the Commercial Registry.
However, the CR should not be confused with the Commercial Permit, sometimes referred to as the commercial licence.
The CR establishes the registered business, while the Commercial Permit is connected to the licensed business location and allows the establishment to carry out the licensed activity from that premises.
Single Window specifically notes that a company that has obtained only a CR but has not yet obtained the necessary Commercial Permit cannot begin conducting its economic activities or recruit employees through the normal establishment process.
This is why companies normally need to keep several linked records current, including the CR, Commercial Permit and establishment registration.
An expired CR can interfere with transactions that require a valid company registration, but avoid assuming that every bank account, visa or licence is automatically frozen on the expiry date. Banks, government authorities and regulated activities each have their own requirements.
When do you need to renew your CR?
CR renewal is not limited to one-year renewals.
MOCI currently allows businesses to renew Commercial Registrations and Commercial Permits for periods ranging from one to five years. Where the CR and Commercial Permit are renewed together, their validity periods should be aligned.
The Ministry advises businesses to renew their commercial registrations and licences 30 days before expiry. Qatar's Commercial Registry Law similarly requires the renewal application during the 30 days preceding the expiry date.
You'll typically need to renew when:
- Your selected CR validity period is approaching its expiry date.
- Your Commercial Permit or other linked licence is also approaching expiry.
- A related government transaction requires the business records to be current.

How to renew your CR through Single Window
The main digital service is Comprehensive Renewal on Qatar's Single Window platform.
MOCI describes Comprehensive Renewal as a service that allows businesses to renew an expired or soon-to-expire:
- Commercial Registration
- Commercial Permit
- Other eligible licences and approvals
It can also obtain approvals for regulated activities from participating government authorities.
Step-by-step comprehensive renewal
- Log in to the Single Window portal. The applicant needs a registered National Authentication System, or Tawtheeq, account linked to a valid QID.
- Choose “Comprehensive Renewal.”
- Enter the primary establishment information requested by the system.
- Upload the required attachments. The exact documents depend on the company, activity and licences being renewed.
- Review the data summary and confirm that the activities, company information and licences are correct.
- Approve the application.
- Pay the calculated fees electronically.
- Download or print the renewed Commercial Registration once the transaction is completed.
Single Window currently gives Comprehensive Renewal an approximate processing time of one day, although regulated activities or applications requiring external approvals can take longer.
Another useful change is that MOCI and the Ministry of Interior now link renewal of the company's CR and licence with the automatic renewal of the establishment registration. Once the process is complete, the updated establishment registration can be accessed through Metrash.
The comprehensive option is useful when several business records expire together because it can process the CR, Commercial Permit and relevant approvals in one workflow.
CR renewal fees in Qatar
MOCI substantially reduced many business-service fees under Ministerial Decision No. 60 of 2024. The Ministry said some charges were reduced by more than 90%, including commercial-registration and licensing fees.
For Commercial Registration renewal, Single Window currently lists:
- QAR 500 per year — one main business activity
- QAR 300 per year — each additional business activity
- QAR 100 per year — each branch CR
These charges should be multiplied according to the renewal period where a business chooses a multi-year renewal.
For example, a business selecting a longer validity period should not assume that the same QAR 500 covers the entire five years.
Commercial Permit fees
Single Window separately lists:
- Commercial Permit — QAR 500
- Home Permit — QAR 300
Commercial and similar premises licences are charged annually under the current fee schedule.
This means that CR and Commercial Permit charges should not be combined into one “QAR 500 company-renewal fee.”
A company with:
- One main activity
- One Commercial Registration
- One standard Commercial Permit
would normally start with QAR 1,000 in MOCI CR and permit charges for a one-year renewal, before Qatar Chamber membership and any sector-specific approvals are added.
Regulated activities can involve additional licensing or approval fees depending on the responsible authority. Single Window advises businesses to check the Business Activities Search Tool for activity-specific requirements.
Qatar Chamber fees
Qatar Chamber fees are additional to MOCI's Commercial Registration fee.
Single Window states that Comprehensive Renewal uses the same Qatar Chamber fee rules applied through Comprehensive Establishment.
For many ordinary companies, the Qatar Chamber fee is based on capital:
- QAR 500 — capital below QAR 500,000
- QAR 1,000 — capital between QAR 500,000 and QAR 1 million
- QAR 2,000 — capital above QAR 1 million and up to QAR 2 million
- QAR 3,000 — capital above QAR 2 million and up to QAR 5 million
- QAR 5,000 — capital above QAR 5 million
Different amounts apply to certain legal structures. Single Window currently lists:
- QAR 10,000 for shareholding or holding companies
- QAR 10,000 for a branch of a foreign company
- QAR 5,000 for a representative office
A QAR 5,000 Qatar Chamber charge can also apply in the specified foreign-investment-exception case where non-Qatari ownership exceeds 49%.
For branch CRs, Single Window says Qatar Chamber renewal is generally:
- The main CR's Qatar Chamber fee, plus
- 10% of that fee for each branch carrying the same activities as the main CR.
If a branch contains an activity not listed on the main CR, the full applicable Qatar Chamber fee can be added instead.
So a simple one-year business renewal can already exceed QAR 1,000 once the CR, Commercial Permit and Qatar Chamber charges are combined.
Always rely on the fee calculation generated by Single Window for the actual company rather than budgeting only around the headline QAR 500 CR fee.
How to amend your CR
Changes to a business are handled through Comprehensive Update on Single Window.
The service allows one or several components of the establishment to be changed in a single request, including:
- Business activities
- Trade name
- Legal structure
- Capital
- Partners and ownership
- Managers
- Board of directors
- Authorised signatories
- Commercial location
- Manager-in-charge
- Company contract or Articles of Association
The system determines the required documents, approvals and fees according to the change requested.
Amendment fees
Single Window currently lists:
- QAR 300 — CR amendment fee, charged once per request where the change affects the Commercial Registration
- QAR 300 — for each additional business activity
- QAR 100 — Commercial Permit amendment where the requested change also affects the permit
This means the article's original statement that adding an activity “typically costs QAR 300” is incomplete.
For example, adding one additional business activity may involve:
QAR 300 CR amendment fee + QAR 300 additional-activity fee = QAR 600
before any activity-specific approvals or Commercial Permit amendments are considered.
Some amendments involving the company's Articles of Association or legal structure can also require contract revision, attestation, signatures or other fees.
For regulated activities, approval from the relevant authority may be required before the change is completed.
Because Qatar's Commercial Registry Law requires changes to registered information to be notified within 30 days, companies should update their CR when the change occurs rather than waiting for the next renewal.
Late renewal and penalties
Do not rely on the idea that there is an automatic grace period after your CR expires.
The Commercial Registry Law requires the renewal application to be submitted during the 30 days preceding expiry, and MOCI specifically advises businesses to renew CRs and licences 30 days before expiry.
However, it is also inaccurate to say that every late renewal automatically attracts a specific late-renewal fine.
The law provides that the competent department may eventually delete a Commercial Registry entry when no renewal application is submitted, after 90 days from notifying the person concerned.
The law also permits the competent department, where the stated conditions are met, to renew a registration after expiry. In that case, the prescribed fee is collected for the full period starting from the date the registration expired.
MOCI's own FAQ confirms that a Commercial Register can ultimately be written off for non-renewal after the 90-day notification process.
The practical approach is therefore simple:
Renew before expiry rather than depending on a post-expiry remedy.
An expired registration may prevent or delay transactions that require a current CR or linked Commercial Permit, and continuing commercial activity without the required valid registrations and licences can create separate compliance problems.
Tips to avoid common CR problems
- Track the actual expiry date — particularly if you selected a multi-year validity period rather than a one-year renewal.
- Start within the 30-day renewal window — MOCI advises renewing commercial registrations and licences 30 days before expiry.
- Keep Tawtheeq and authorised-signatory information current — Single Window requires the applicant to have a valid QID and National Authentication System account.
- Review business activities — remove activities you no longer need and confirm that all activities you actually conduct are registered and licensed. MOCI prohibits businesses from conducting activities outside those listed on the CR and Commercial Permit.
- Update company information promptly — registered changes generally need to be entered in the Commercial Registry within 30 days.
- Budget for Qatar Chamber fees — the QAR 500 CR figure is not the entire renewal cost.

Do I pay Qatar Chamber fees separately?
