HMC launches Human Tissue Biobank to advance precision medicine in Qatar

Hamad Medical Corporation’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has launched a Human Tissue Biobank in collaboration with the Qatar Precision Health Institute, in a move aimed at strengthening precision medicine and biomedical research in Qatar.

The biobank brings together a large collection of human tissue material that can support research into diseases, improve diagnostic methods and contribute to more personalised approaches to treatment.

2.6 million tissue slides included

According to HMC, the Human Tissue Biobank contains approximately:

  • 700,000 paraffin blocks containing human tissue samples
  • 2.6 million tissue slides

The collection provides researchers and healthcare professionals with a significant resource for studying disease and developing more advanced approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Supporting deeper understanding of diseases

One of the main goals of the biobank is to help researchers gain a deeper understanding of diseases by studying preserved human tissue samples.

Access to a large collection of samples can support research into how diseases develop and how they differ between patients.

More precise diagnosis

The biobank is also expected to support more accurate diagnosis through advanced tissue and molecular techniques.

By combining tissue analysis with modern diagnostic technologies, clinicians and researchers can gain more detailed information about disease characteristics.

Helping guide treatment decisions

Another objective is to improve treatment decisions by supporting the selection of more appropriate therapies for individual patients.

This aligns with the wider concept of precision medicine, where treatment can be informed by more detailed biological and molecular information rather than relying solely on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Supporting research and innovation in Qatar

The Human Tissue Biobank is also intended to strengthen Qatar’s capabilities in precision medicine and biomedical research.

Through the collaboration between HMC and the Qatar Precision Health Institute, the initiative provides researchers with infrastructure that can support future studies, innovation and the development of more personalised healthcare approaches.
