Hurricane Simon hit Mexico's Pacific coast, while its strongest winds and rains swept through an area between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the ocean.
The center of the hurricane was located along the coast, approaching the Puerto Vallarta area, where its strongest winds and destructive rain were expected to hit the area around midnight and last until Monday morning.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said it was unclear whether the hurricane would make landfall, which could allow it to maintain its dangerous strength, while maintaining wind speeds of 140 mph (220 kilometers per hour).
Winds of hurricane strength extend up to 25 miles (35 kilometers) from the center of the hurricane, while winds of tropical storm strength reach 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the center of Simon, meaning the entire area between Mexico's west coast and the Sierra Madre Mountains could be affected by the hurricane.
Last week, Mexican authorities declared a state of alert in anticipation of the effects of three hurricanes and storms moving around the country, two in the Pacific Ocean and one in the Gulf of Mexico, amid forecasts of unfavorable weather conditions in the coming days, especially in a number of coastal states.
During the 2026 season, Mexico expects between 18 and 21 named tropical storms to form in the Pacific Ocean, including four to five strong hurricanes.
