Mexican Crafts Take Centre Stage in Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture

As part of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture, Mexican crafts are taking centre stage in Doha this autumn through a rich programme of exhibitions and initiatives in design and culinary experiences. Creators from both countries are seeking to develop new applications for traditional techniques by blending cultural heritage with contemporary lifestyles.

In this context, the exhibition “Expanded Tradition: Contemporary Craft Practices in Mexico” forms the central pillar of the programme and welcomes visitors until 26 December. It features 106 works created by 26 artisans and creative collectives from 12 Mexican states.

At MIHAD in Doha Design District, crafts also become part of a shared dining experience. Panadería Rosetta, led by chef Elena Reygadas, arrives in Doha for the first time from 5 to 15 November, serving its baked goods alongside ceramic pieces and handcrafted lighting created by Mexican designer Perla Valtierra, bringing food and its accompanying objects together in an enjoyable harmony.

Visitors in Doha can also explore “The Sower,” an art installation created by Fernando Laposse, at Fereej Al Asmakh until 31 January 2027.

The Year of Culture partnership model is based on reciprocity, with Mexico reflecting practices also found in Qatar. Both countries have rich craft traditions shaped by their natural environments, knowledge passed down through generations, and trade.
