Meta and Apple Collaborate to Launch Open-Weight AI Model with Vast Capabilities

Meta and Apple have collaborated to launch an open-weight artificial intelligence model with vast capabilities. The companies entered into a partnership to optimise Meta's Muse Spark Open AI model to run on clusters of Mac Studio computers powered by M5 chips, using Apple's open-source MLX machine-learning framework.

The model has 816 billion parameters and a context window of up to one million tokens. It supports local operation on the hardware, allowing developers to carry out complex programming tasks and run agentic AI applications securely without relying on third-party cloud infrastructure.

According to a report published by Android Headlines, the partnership marks a new phase of cooperation between the companies in artificial intelligence after years of disputes concerning user privacy and tracking for targeted advertising. Their collaboration represents an unexpected shift in their relationship, as they had criticised each other for years over privacy policies and user-tracking mechanisms, but growing interest in running AI locally brought them together around a shared goal.

Engineers from Meta and Apple worked together for months, using the open-source MLX machine-learning framework developed by Apple to ensure that the model runs efficiently on hardware based on Apple silicon. The collaboration received public praise from senior executives at both companies.

Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang jokingly commented on the rapprochement between the former rivals, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO John Ternus shared supportive posts on X. Ternus said that running a huge, advanced AI model directly on a desktop workstation pushes on-device processing capabilities to new frontiers.

Muse Spark Open has a total of 816 billion parameters and a vast context window of up to one million tokens, giving it the capacity to handle large amounts of information within a single session.

Meta developed the multimodal model to handle complex software-engineering tasks, advanced coding and multi-step reasoning. These capabilities make it suitable for developers working on advanced AI applications. As the model is available in an open-weight format, developers can download its weights directly from Hugging Face and then modify and customise them to develop tools tailored to their needs. However, running the complete model locally requires costly equipment, with developers needing a powerful computing setup resembling a miniature supercomputer. This comprises two Mac Studio computers with M5 Ultra chips connected by cables.

According to estimates cited in the report, this provides a local workstation capable of running the model without requiring confidential source code, internal documents or proprietary corporate data to be sent to third-party cloud servers. The approach gives organisations and developers greater control over their data, particularly when handling sensitive information or software projects that cannot be shared outside the working environment.

Running Meta's model on Apple's popular hardware helps strengthen its open-weight model ecosystem and enables it to compete with rapidly growing Chinese companies such as Alibaba and Moonshot AI.

The collaboration also expands the use of Meta's models among developers and organisations that prefer to run AI locally instead of relying on external cloud services. For Apple, the partnership strengthens Mac Studio's position as a powerful platform for running AI workloads locally, which could support sales of its high-margin hardware. At the same time, this direction allows Apple to benefit from growing demand for running advanced models on devices without having to invest billions of dollars in building its own consumer chatbot.

The partnership therefore combines Meta's advanced models with Apple's powerful hardware, reflecting the growing importance of running AI locally to strengthen privacy and data control and provide developers with advanced computing capabilities.
