Five decades of achievements and sports legacy. Khalifa International Stadium celebrates 50 years of its opening

This year, the Aspire Zone Foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the opening of Khalifa International Stadium, one of Qatar's most prominent sports landmarks, and a symbol of a national journey full of achievements and exceptional sports milestones that contributed to consolidating the country's position on the regional and global sports map.

Since its opening in 1976, Khalifa International Stadium has been a testament to five decades of sporting development in Qatar, hosting many major sporting tournaments and events, welcoming elite athletes and teams from around the world, becoming an integral part of the national sporting heritage and one of the region's most prominent sports facilities.

Over the course of five decades, the stadium's history has been associated with many major sports milestones, most notably, the opening of the stadium in conjunction with the hosting of the fourth edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup in 1976, and the crowning of the Qatari national team with the title of the eleventh Arabian Gulf Cup in 1992.

In 2006, it hosted the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, and in 2011 it hosted a number of AFC Asian Cup matches, including the final.

In 2019, it hosted the World Athletics Championships, the first edition to be held in the Middle East, and in 2022, it hosted eight matches of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, including the third-place match, as well as matches from the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 and the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025.

Five decades since the opening of Khalifa International Stadium is a testament to the timeless moments and achievements that have left its mark on Qatar's sporting history, and reflects the role the stadium continues to play in supporting the development of the sports sector and hosting major events, further cementing Qatar's position as a leading destination for hosting global sporting events.

Aspire Zone Foundation looks forward to continuing this journey and building on this rich sporting heritage in line with Qatar's ambitions towards a more distinctive and sustainable sporting future.
