Abdulrahman Abdulhamid wins Qatar’s first medal at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games

Qatar has secured its first medal of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, with karate athlete Abdulrahman Abdulhamid winning silver in the men’s under-60kg kumite competition.

The result put Qatar on the medal table early in the Games, which are being held across Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya in Japan from September 19 to October 4. Qatar has sent 243 athletes to compete across 26 sports.

Silver in under-60kg kumite

Abdulhamid progressed through the men’s under-60kg competition and defeated Malaysia’s H. Sureeya Sankar 7–1 in the semi-final to secure his place in the gold-medal bout.

He ultimately finished with the silver medal, while Kuwait’s Abdullah Shaaban claimed gold in the event.

Qatar is participating with one of its largest Asian Games delegations, comprising 243 athletes competing in disciplines ranging from athletics and football to swimming, karate, shooting, equestrian sport and weightlifting.

The Aichi-Nagoya Games also serve as an important continental competition for Qatar ahead of the next Asian Games, which Doha will host in 2030.
