Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum passes away, Dubai declares 10 days of mourning

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The Court of the Ruler of Dubai announced a 10-day period of official mourning across the emirate, beginning Monday, with UAE flags to be flown at half-mast during the mourning period.

Sheikh Mohammed pays tribute to his brother

Following the announcement, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid paid tribute to his brother in a message shared on social media, praying for mercy and solace for his family and loved ones.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also offered condolences, noting Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contributions to the UAE’s development.

Longstanding role in Dubai

Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid was a member of Dubai’s ruling family and held several roles during his career. He was closely associated with Al Wasl Sports Club, serving as its president for decades, and also held senior responsibilities linked to Dubai’s security and public service institutions.

He had also graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom before serving in Dubai’s military establishment.
