From transforming Qatar into a global energy powerhouse to investing in education, healthcare and world-class infrastructure, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the nation and elevated its standing on the world stage.

The State of Qatar mourns the passing of His Highness the Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a visionary leader whose bold leadership helped shape modern Qatar.

During his 18 years as Amir, from 1995 to 2013, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani oversaw one of the most remarkable periods of transformation in the country's history. Under his leadership, Qatar evolved into a global leader in energy, education, aviation, diplomacy and sustainable development—laying the foundations for the nation that exists today.

A Journey That Began in Doha

Born in Doha in January 1952, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani would go on to become one of the most influential figures in Qatar's modern history.

His journey in public service began after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom in 1971. Returning home, he joined the Qatar Armed Forces and embarked on a lifelong commitment to serving his country.

Leading a New Era

On 27 June 1995, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani assumed leadership as Amir of the State of Qatar, ushering in a new chapter defined by ambitious reforms, economic diversification and international engagement.

His vision extended beyond short-term development. It focused on building strong institutions, investing in people and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

Investing in Knowledge and Human Development

One of HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's earliest priorities was education.

In 1995, he and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser established Qatar Foundation, an institution dedicated to education, science, research and community development.

The following year saw the establishment of Qatar Academy, laying the foundation for what would become Education City—a globally recognised hub bringing together leading international universities, research centres and innovation institutions.

These initiatives reflected HH Sheikh Hamad's belief that a nation's greatest investment is its people.

Elevating Qatar's Global Presence

HH Sheikh Hamad's vision also transformed Qatar's international profile.

In 1996, the launch of Al Jazeera positioned Qatar as an influential voice in international media, while the country's expanding liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry entered a new phase of growth that would help establish Qatar as one of the world's leading energy producers.

The following year, Qatar Airways was relaunched with a bold ambition to become a world-class airline. Over the years, it grew into one of the world's most respected carriers, connecting Qatar with destinations across six continents.

Building a Modern Nation

HH Sheikh Hamad's leadership was marked by investments in landmark national projects that continue to define Qatar today.

In 2004, the Sidra Medical and Research Center was launched, reinforcing the country's commitment to world-class healthcare, medical research and education.

A year later, construction began on Hamad International Airport, a project that would become one of the region's largest aviation hubs. In the same year, Lusail City was established, introducing Qatar's vision for a smart, sustainable city.

By 2006, Qatar had become the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), strengthening its position as a global energy leader and driving decades of economic growth.

In 2007, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ordered the construction of the New Doha Port, now known as Hamad Port, with an investment of QAR 27 billion, significantly enhancing Qatar's maritime capabilities and international trade.

A Vision for the Future

The launch of Qatar National Vision 2030 in 2008 marked another defining moment in HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani's leadership.

The national strategy established a long-term framework for balancing economic growth with human, social and environmental development, guiding Qatar's progress well into the future.

Two years later, Qatar achieved another historic milestone when it secured the right to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, becoming the first country in the Middle East to stage football's biggest tournament.

In the same year, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani laid the foundation stone for Msheireb Downtown Doha, one of the world's first sustainable downtown regeneration projects, reflecting Qatar's growing focus on smart urban development.

Expanding Infrastructure and Connectivity

The pace of development continued in 2011.

The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) opened its doors as one of the Middle East's premier venues for international conferences and exhibitions.

HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani also established the Qatar Railways Steering Committee, paving the way for Qatar Rail, which would later oversee transformative projects including the Doha Metro, Lusail Tram and Qatar's long-term rail network.

Together, these initiatives strengthened Qatar's infrastructure and prepared the country for future growth.

A Historic Transition

On 25 June 2013, HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani voluntarily transferred power to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, ensuring a smooth and peaceful transition of leadership.

The move was widely regarded as a historic moment in the region, reflecting his belief in institutional continuity and long-term national stability.

A Legacy That Lives On

The legacy of HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani can be seen across every corner of Qatar.

From world-class educational institutions and pioneering healthcare facilities to global aviation, energy leadership, sustainable cities and transformative infrastructure, his vision reshaped the nation and elevated Qatar's standing on the international stage.

His contributions continue to influence the country's development, serving as a lasting testament to a leader whose vision extended far beyond his time in office.

May Allah (SWT) have mercy upon him, forgive him, and grant him the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. Ameen.

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
