Meta has announced the addition of voice and video calling support to WhatsApp Web, enabling users to make and receive calls directly through an internet browser.
The update expands the capabilities of WhatsApp Web, which previously focused primarily on exchanging messages and files, while calling features were available through the mobile and desktop applications.
Meta said calls made through WhatsApp Web will be free, protected by end-to-end encryption and available without time limits. The service will also include call history and screen-sharing support during video calls.
The feature is intended in part for people using workplace or shared devices on which applications cannot be installed.
WhatsApp Web will support video calls involving up to 32 participants, bringing its capabilities closer to those offered by online meeting platforms.
Meta has also introduced several additional calling features, including a waiting room that allows hosts to manage participants before they join.
Other improvements include enhanced call quality, reduced background noise and the ability to transfer an ongoing call between a phone and a computer without ending it.
The company has begun rolling out the new calling features gradually to WhatsApp users worldwide, with more accounts expected to receive access over time.
