Luke Lindbergh, the new executive director of the World Food Programme, has warned that 266 million people in the world are currently facing acute food insecurity.
Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York today, Lindbergh said two-thirds of these people are facing severe food insecurity due to conflict, adding that bottlenecks in supply chains around the world are further exacerbating the problem.
"WFP staff are overcoming obstacles such as rickety roads, dropping aid by air in previously thought to be inaccessible, and reaching places that others can't reach."
The WFP Executive Director noted that WFP's operations are currently focusing in particular on three countries, Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia, which are going through difficult and harsh situations, adding: "Our team will continue to work on ways to help alleviate the suffering in these three countries."
He pointed out that his first visit will be in the coming weeks to Sudan, "which is facing a very serious situation in terms of acute hunger."
Last September, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of American Luke Lindbergh as executive director of the World Food Programme, succeeding Cindy McCain.
