Qatar Student Laith Tuwair Earns Honourable Mention at IMO 2026

Qatar recorded an honourable achievement at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2026), with student Laith Tuwair receiving an Honourable Mention during the competition held in Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 21.

Six students represented Qatar at the international competition, competing alongside talented mathematics students from more than 121 countries.

The 2026 edition marked Qatar’s second participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, following its debut in the 66th edition in 2025.

Laith Tuwair’s Honourable Mention reflects the progress being made by Qatar’s students in international academic competitions, as well as their abilities in mathematical reasoning, analysis and solving unconventional problems.

The achievement followed an intensive training programme lasting several months. The programme included advanced preparation across different areas of Olympiad mathematics, supported by specialised academic supervision aimed at developing students’ analytical and creative thinking skills and their ability to tackle highly complex mathematical problems.

Members of the Qatar team demonstrated strong commitment and discipline throughout the preparation and competition stages and took part in training programmes and qualifying camps ahead of the Olympiad.

The participation also reflects the efforts of the Educational Affairs Sector at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, represented by the Educational Guidance Department, to support gifted students, develop their scientific abilities and prepare them to compete internationally.

The Ministry of Education and Higher Education congratulated Laith Tuwair and all members of the Qatar team on their participation and achievement, wishing them further success in future academic competitions.
