Qatar University develops smart, non-invasive AI device to check blood sugar levels

Qatar University has developed GlucoWatch, a smart wearable device that estimates blood glucose non‑invasively using artificial intelligence and physiological signal analysis, offering an alternative to finger‑prick testing.

Led by researcher and inventor Dr Khaled Abu Al Saud, the project involved Computer Engineering students Noura Al Bardini, Mazoon Al Shahwani, Fatima Al Kaabi and Sarah Al Muhannadi, and has a published US patent application (US20240138776A).

GlucoWatch analyses indicators such as heart rate and blood pressure, plus demographic data, to provide periodic glucose estimates via a mobile app, issue alerts when levels fall outside medically approved ranges, and allow secure data sharing with family or healthcare providers.

The prototype began as a senior design project and went on to win a gold medal at the International Invention Fair of the Middle East in Kuwait in 2023, after stages including device design, AI model development, app creation and initial performance verification.

The team is now expanding data collection, refining AI models and advancing the smart bracelet design, while seeking partnerships with health and industry stakeholders to turn the technology into an affordable marketable product integrated with digital healthcare and remote monitoring systems.

Dr Abu Al Saud stressed that investing in health research and innovation aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and expressed hope that GlucoWatch will become a medical product serving patients in Qatar and beyond once all scientific and regulatory requirements are met.
