Cristiano Ronaldo ends 23-year career with Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a record-breaking 23-year career with the Portugal national team.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message on Thursday, November 5, saying the time had come to hand Portugal’s No. 7 shirt to the next generation.

Ronaldo finishes his international career with 234 appearances and 146 goals — both men's international football records.

Ronaldo says farewell after 23 years

Ronaldo made his senior Portugal debut in August 2003 and went on to represent his country across more than two decades.

In his farewell message, he said the decision had not been easy and reflected on the people, memories and emotions connected to his international career rather than simply his goals, records and trophies.

He said his journey on the pitch with Portugal had come to an end but that he would continue supporting the national team.

234 appearances and 146 goals

Ronaldo leaves international football as the men's record-holder for both international appearances and goals.

His final numbers stand at:

  • 234 international appearances
  • 146 goals
  • Euro 2016 champion
  • UEFA Nations League winner in 2019
  • UEFA Nations League winner in 2025

He also represented Portugal at six FIFA World Cups and six European Championships.

Portugal's most decorated era

Ronaldo captained Portugal to their first major international trophy at Euro 2016.

Three years later, he helped the national team win the inaugural UEFA Nations League, before Portugal lifted the competition again in 2025.

His international career began before Euro 2004 and spanned multiple generations of Portuguese players.

Portugal federation plans tribute

The Portuguese Football Federation responded to Ronaldo's retirement by expressing its gratitude for his contribution to the national team.

The federation said it intends to organise a tribute worthy of his career, giving supporters another opportunity to celebrate the former Portugal captain.

It also highlighted his impact on Portuguese football and the generations of young players inspired by his career.

Ronaldo continues with Al Nassr

Ronaldo's retirement applies only to international football.

He continues to play at club level for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, where he remains in pursuit of the 1,000-goal milestone across his senior career.

His departure from Portugal closes one of the longest and most successful international careers in men's football.
