Qatar’s U18 national basketball team will face China on August 16 in the second round of Group C at the FIBA U18 Asia Cup in India.
The team will be aiming to recover from its opening defeat to Iran and keep its hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.
Qatar lost 94-69 to Iran in its first match, while China opened its campaign with a 103-55 victory over Sri Lanka.
The match presents a difficult test for Qatar, which will need a more balanced and disciplined performance while attempting to prevent China from controlling the tempo.
The two teams most recently met on September 3, 2024, when China defeated Qatar 99-43 in the group stage of the U18 Asia Cup. China also beat Qatar 88-44 in the quarter-finals of the 2022 edition.
Elsewhere in Group C, Iran will face Sri Lanka at 11:00 AM Doha time, with Iran seeking a second consecutive win and Sri Lanka looking to recover from its opening defeat.
China and Iran currently lead Group C with two points each, while Qatar and Sri Lanka have one point apiece.
Qatar will conclude its group-stage campaign against Sri Lanka on August 18 in a match that could prove important to its qualification hopes.
Group C consists of Qatar, China, Iran and Sri Lanka. Group A features Australia, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Thailand, while Group B includes New Zealand, Lebanon, Bahrain and Syria. Group D consists of South Korea, Japan, India and Kazakhstan.
Sixteen teams are competing in four groups of four, with the group stage running from August 13 to 18.
The winners of each group advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing second and third will contest playoff matches on August 20 to determine the remaining quarter-finalists.
The quarter-finals will take place on August 21, followed by the semi-finals on August 22 and the final on August 23, alongside classification matches for fifth to eighth place.
