Qatar Museums (QM) opened the Mohad Gallery in Doha Design District, developed by QC+, to create a platform that brings together artists and designers from Qatar, the region and around the world, and allows them to showcase their work to the public and art collectors, based on the concept of "living with art and design" and enhancing their presence in everyday life.
The gallery, which kicked off with the opening of three art exhibitions, offers a space for creatives and individuals and institutions to connect through artwork and design and bespoke execution, as well as a renewed programme of exhibitions, design shows, panel discussions, workshops and cultural events.
Kirsten Mearns, CEO of QC Plus, said that the establishment of Mohad Gallery stems from the belief in the importance of providing a space that embraces exceptional works of art and design, and celebrates creative talent, especially artists and designers from Qatar, the region and the world.
She added that the gallery seeks to connect the public with artists, creators and curators, and to provide a comfortable environment that encourages interaction with artworks and the discovery and acquisition of new experiences, stressing that the goal is for the gallery to become a creative space open to the community, bringing people together and allowing them to dialogue, learn and communicate. She also pointed out the launch of a program to host creative chefs, which expands the cultural experience for visitors.
For her part, Irina Kalitinkina, director of Mahad Gallery, said that the project is based on a vision that believes that art and design should not remain confined to museums and galleries, but should reach homes and become part of everyday life and a subject of discussion and community interaction.
She added that the gallery opened three new exhibitions today, namely "Rooted Elsewhere", "Beyond the Letters", and "Traces of Desert Light", which deal with the themes of landscape and belonging, the arts of Arabic and Persian crafts, and the relationship between light, materials and crafts, pointing out that the exhibition management is keen to provide the public with the opportunity to meet artists and curators and learn about the ideas and experiences behind the exhibited works.
Claire Kyle, Director of Commercial and Artistic Design at QC Plus, explained that the three exhibitions include "Rooted Elsewhere", which celebrates the Qatar-Canada and Mexico Year of Culture 2026, which brings together the work of six artists, Wadha Al-Athba, Amna Al-Bakr, Hamad Al-Fayhani, Joanna Johnston, Tisar Lo and Carl Mata Hippel, and includes works in photography, textiles and mixed media.
The exhibition deals with the landscape as a repository of memory, identity and belonging, and not just a place where humans live, inspired by the natural environments of the artists' original areas and the places they moved to, and the experiences, memories and renewed perceptions of the homeland they carry.
She said that the second exhibition "Beyond the Letters" will be held in cooperation with the Doha Design Biennale 2026, under the artistic supervision of Ali Asali and Basma Hamdi, and in cooperation with Virginia Commonwealth University College of Design Arts in Qatar, exploring the historical, geographical, spiritual and performative dimensions of Arabic and Persian craft art, through installations, audiovisual works, textiles, sculpture, jewelry, and experimental prints.
She noted that the third exhibition, "Traces of Desert Light", is held in cooperation with the Doha Design Biennale 2026, under the supervision of the curator Tinh de Beck, where it explores light as a physical presence and a bearer of memory, through works in textiles, ceramics, sculptural furniture and wooden figures, highlighting traditional crafts and inherited knowledge, and the cultural memory of the materials and traces of handicrafts.
The exhibition features works by Morefi and Majdolin Nasrallah, Sheikha Al-Sulaiti and Angela Ramos Garthes, as well as pieces by LenRo Khachatryan, Aisha Habiba Kuchuk, and a collection of ceramics by Mexican designer Perla Valtiera, whose works explore how these materials carry cultural memory.
