Three new Qur’anic gardens open in Msheireb Downtown Doha

The Quran Botanical Garden, a member of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in collaboration with Msheireb Properties' Doha Design District, has launched three new gardens in Msheireb Downtown Doha, in an initiative that aims to integrate the plants and trees contained in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet into the urban fabric of the city.

The project is a live public exhibition that allows visitors to explore the links between nature, faith and cultural heritage, by displaying a collection of plants that hold a special place in Islamic civilization.

The gardens were inaugurated in the presence of representatives of the participating entities, where a group of Sidr, Arak, Atraj, figs, olives and pomegranates were planted near the Al-Wadi Mosque on Al-Ghafat Street in the city center.

The gardens feature more than 14 plant species from the Quran Botanical Garden collection, providing visitors, residents, families and students with an opportunity to learn about the plant, cultural and ethical significance of these plants rooted in Islamic heritage.

Each plant was also provided with introductory plates that include its scientific name, natural habitat, and evidence of it in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet, as well as information on its environmental characteristics and cultural affiliations.

Ms. Fatima Al-Khulaifi, Director of the Quran Botanical Garden, said that the plants mentioned in the Holy Quran and the Sunnah carry important cultural and ethical messages, noting that the collaboration with Doha Design District aims to present a selection of these plants in the heart of Msheireb, in line with the garden's mission to introduce and preserve them.

She added that these gardens encourage visitors to explore Islamic principles related to the conservation of plant diversity, stressing that knowledge of the plant represents the first step towards spreading awareness of its importance and enhancing its conservation efforts for future generations.

Ali Khalifa Al Hitmi, Director of Innovation at Msheireb Properties, said: "Outstanding public spaces are not only about connecting people to the place, but also about ideas, history and community connection.

He explained that the collaboration between Doha Design District and the Quran Botanical Garden brings a new dimension to Msheireb Downtown Doha by integrating plant heritage into everyday urban life, allowing the public to reflect on the role of culture and environmental responsibility in shaping shared spaces.

The initiative coincides with Qatar Sustainability Week, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness in urban life and embodying Msheireb Properties' commitment to sustainability and a human-centred approach to planning and development.

The parks also support community learning and enrich Msheireb Downtown Doha's position as a destination for design, creativity and culture.

The three gardens display a range of plants mentioned in the Holy Quran or Hadith, including palms, olives, figs, and pomegranates, as well as plants associated with the local environment of the Arabian Peninsula, such as Sidr, Athal (Tarfa), Arak (Siwak), Banana, Henna, Sabr, Atraj, Basham, Samar and Qarz.

This collection highlights the value of plant diversity and the importance of choosing plants that are suitable for local climatic conditions, providing an accessible educational and knowledge experience for visitors of all ages to learn about religious references, traditional uses and the environmental importance of these plants.
