US President Donald Trump criticised NATO members over what he described as insufficient support for the United States during its war with Iran.

His remarks came during the NATO summit in Ankara, where he raised concerns about the level of assistance provided by alliance members during US operations in Iran.

NATO chief Mark Rutte, who was seated beside Trump, pushed back by highlighting European support for the operations. He said that “5,000 planes were taking off from European airports in support” of US operations in Iran.

Rutte also said Europe had served as “one big platform of power projection for the United States,” pointing to the role of European airports and infrastructure during the conflict.

Trump responded by criticising specific allies, saying the United Kingdom would not allow all of its bases to be used. He also singled out Italy, describing its support for the United States with bases as “very bad.”
