The Qatar Handball Association announced on Monday that it had officially appointed Spaniard Ambros Martin as head coach of Qatar’s senior men’s national handball team, succeeding Montenegrin Veselin Vujović.
The Association said in a statement on its official accounts that the 57-year-old Spanish coach will take charge of the team in line with its vision of delivering an outstanding level for Qatari handball at the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship in Germany.
Ambros Martin is regarded as one of Europe’s leading handball coaches. He previously received the Best Coach award twice, in 2016 and 2018, and won the European handball championship title six times with the national teams of Spain and Romania.
The coach will prepare Qatar for the World Championship in Germany in January 2027. Qatar will compete in Group E alongside Sweden, Norway and Greece.
The Spanish coach’s first match with the team will be next Thursday against Saudi Arabia in a friendly at Duhail Handball Sports Hall.
Qatar previously reached the World Championship final and finished second at the 2015 edition hosted in Doha.
