Google has launched Google Pics, a new artificial intelligence-powered tool designed to make creating and editing professional-looking visuals easier for everyday users.
The tool is part of Google Workspace and uses Google’s Nano Banana image generation and editing technology to generate new visuals from text prompts or make precise changes to existing images.
Google says Pics is designed for uses ranging from social media graphics and digital announcements to flyers and other visual content, without requiring traditional professional design skills.
Edit individual objects without changing the whole image
One of Google Pics’ main features is object-level editing.
Users can select a specific element within an image and instruct the AI to change, move or transform it while leaving the rest of the visual largely untouched.
For example, a user could select an item of clothing and change its colour rather than generating an entirely new image. Multiple changes can also be processed together.
Edit and translate text inside graphics
Pics can also detect text contained within an image.
Users can replace or restyle individual text elements and translate wording while attempting to preserve the original visual design and typography.
This could make the feature particularly useful for social media teams, marketers and businesses adapting visual content for different audiences.
Create multiple versions and upscale to 4K
Rather than generating only one result, Google Pics can provide alternative versions based on the same prompt.
The tool also allows users to crop visuals for web, social media, print and other formats, while finished images can be downloaded in their original resolution or upscaled to 2K or 4K JPEG.
Built into Google Workspace
A major part of Google’s strategy is integration with its existing Workspace ecosystem.
Pics operates as a standalone tool but is also being integrated into apps including Google Docs, Slides and Drive, allowing users to edit visuals within the applications they are already using.
Users can also share designs with collaborators and give others viewing or editing access.
Google enters a competitive AI design market
Google Pics puts the company into more direct competition with platforms such as Canva and Adobe Express, which have increasingly added generative AI and automated design features to their products.
Google’s differentiator is likely to be its close connection with Workspace, allowing businesses and creators already working in Docs, Slides and Drive to keep more of their creative workflow within the same ecosystem.
Google Pics is currently rolling out over the coming weeks to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most eligible Workspace business customers.
