Hamad Medical Corporation has introduced a new temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy service at Aisha Bint Hamad Al Attiyah Hospital, expanding minimally invasive treatment options for patients with certain jaw-joint disorders.
The procedure uses a small arthroscope — a thin camera inserted through a tiny incision near the joint — to allow surgeons to directly examine and, where appropriate, treat problems inside the TMJ.
What is TMJ arthroscopy?
The temporomandibular joint connects the jawbone to the skull and allows movements needed for talking, chewing and yawning.
TMJ arthroscopy is a form of keyhole surgery. A small camera is inserted into the joint through a tiny opening near the ear, allowing the surgeon to see the joint in detail. Fine instruments can also be introduced through additional small incisions if treatment is needed.
What conditions can it help treat?
According to HMC’s announcement, the service may be used for patients with:
- Chronic TMJ pain
- Limited jaw movement
- Inflammatory conditions
- Joint adhesions
- Disorders involving the joint disc
In suitable patients, TMJ arthroscopy can be used both to diagnose the problem and treat it during the same procedure.
