National Museum of Qatar to showcase over 1,000 years of Chinese ceramics

Qatar Museums will open a major new exhibition exploring more than a millennium of Chinese ceramics and maritime trade at the National Museum of Qatar on October 26, 2026.

Titled “Boats Looming from the Far Horizon: The Legacy of Chinese Ceramics Across the Seas,” the exhibition will feature more than 120 objects from the National Museum of China, alongside a smaller selection from Qatar Museums’ collections.

The exhibition will remain open until February 15, 2027.

From the Tang to Qing dynasties

The exhibition traces the development of Chinese ceramics from the Tang Dynasty through the Qing Dynasty, spanning 618 to 1911 AD.

Visitors will see a wide range of vessels, plates, bowls and jars that illustrate how ceramic production evolved alongside the maritime routes that carried Chinese goods across international markets.

Highlights include:

• White-painted porcelain and celadon from the Tang Dynasty
• Works from the Southern Song and Yuan periods
• Blue-and-white porcelain from the Ming Dynasty
• Richly decorated ceramics from the Qing Dynasty

Together, the pieces show how decorative techniques, forms and production traditions changed over time, while also reflecting the influence of growing overseas demand.

Tracing the Maritime Silk Road

A major theme of the exhibition is the role of maritime trade in spreading Chinese ceramics across Asia and beyond.

Chinese porcelain travelled overseas for centuries, becoming closely linked with the history of the Maritime Silk Road and long-distance cultural exchange.

The exhibition explores how these trade routes connected producers, merchants and communities across different regions and helped shape both ceramic design and consumer tastes.

Qatar connection included in final section

The exhibition concludes with two installations drawing on Qatar Museums collections and archaeological material from Qatar.

One section includes pieces linked to the 10th-century Cirebon shipwreck, while another features a fragment of Chinese pottery discovered during archaeological excavations in Qatar.

These finds add a local perspective to the wider story of maritime trade and demonstrate how Chinese ceramics formed part of historical exchange networks that reached the Gulf.

Marking 10 years since Qatar-China Year of Culture

The exhibition also marks the 10th anniversary of the Qatar-China Year of Culture 2016.

HE Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the National Museum of Qatar, described the exhibition as the latest step in a long-running partnership between the National Museum of Qatar and the National Museum of China.

The collaboration follows the exhibition “Nomadic Life from a New Perspective,” which opened at the National Museum of China in Beijing in June 2026 and explored the lives and creativity of Qatar’s Bedouin and semi-Bedouin communities from the 18th century to the discovery of oil.

Part of Qatar Creates Fall/Winter season

Boats Looming from the Far Horizon forms part of the Qatar Creates Fall/Winter 2026–27 season, joining a wider programme of exhibitions and cultural events across the country.

The exhibition reflects Qatar Museums’ continued focus on cultural exchange, research collaboration and international museum partnerships.
