Marking World Coral Reef Day on June 1, Qatar’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) highlighted progress on its national coral reef protection and restoration project, underscoring the importance of coral reefs in supporting marine biodiversity and environmental balance.

Assistant Undersecretary for Protection and Natural Reserves Dr Ibrahim Al Maslamani said the project is based on scientific monitoring and habitat restoration and supports Qatar’s sustainability goals and efforts to strengthen ecosystem resilience against climate change and environmental pressures.

He noted that coral reefs help sustain marine life and fish stocks, protect coastlines, and contribute to eco-tourism, research, education, and environmental awareness.

Between 2024 and 2026, marine research teams conducted field surveys across Qatari waters, identifying 49 species of hard and soft corals at 22 marine sites. The findings have helped identify ecologically significant sites to guide future conservation and restoration efforts.

The project includes coral transplantation, reef rehabilitation, and the use of marine engineering techniques to support coral growth and stability. It also provides training for divers and volunteers to enhance national capacity in marine conservation, monitoring, and restoration.

MoECC said the initiative supports Qatar’s international environmental commitments, including UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, and emphasized the importance of continued scientific monitoring and data collection.
