Qatar Charity, with the support of philanthropists and in cooperation with Somaliland’s Ministry of Employment, Social Affairs and Family, has delivered a series of economic empowerment projects benefiting 113 people from vulnerable groups in Hargeisa.
The initiative forms part of Qatar Charity’s development efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods, reduce unemployment and help low-income families become more self-reliant.
The projects distributed to beneficiaries included clothing shops, grocery stores selling food supplies and vegetables, fish and seafood marketing ventures, taxis, motorcycles, three-wheeled vehicles and barber shops.
Qatar Charity said the projects were selected following assessments of beneficiaries’ needs, experience and local market requirements, with the aim of improving their chances of success and long-term sustainability.
Milgo Mohamed Elmi, Somaliland’s Minister of Employment, Social Affairs and Family, praised the initiative for supporting needy families and contributing to greater economic and social stability.
She said economic empowerment projects offer an effective way to address livelihood challenges affecting unemployed and low-income families and highlighted the importance of cooperation between government institutions and humanitarian and development organisations.
Abdulfattah Adam Moalim, Director of Qatar Charity’s office in Somalia, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable groups through development projects that provide stable sources of income.
He noted that women, particularly female breadwinners and mothers of orphans, represented a significant proportion of the beneficiaries.
Moalim added that the projects were selected according to beneficiaries’ experience and local market needs to maximise their development and social impact.
Several beneficiaries also welcomed the initiative, saying the projects could significantly improve their lives and those of their families.
Kaysi Barkhad Abdi, who received a men’s barber shop project, said the support had given him an opportunity to begin earning an income after a long period of unemployment and had renewed his confidence in the future.
