Qatar’s athletics team secured 13 medals at the 4th GCC Games – Doha 2026, held at the Suhaim Bin Hamad Stadium on Thursday.
Qatar’s athletes collected five gold, five silver, and three bronze medals amid strong participation from Gulf athletes under the Games slogan ‘One Gulf, One Heart.’
Qatari athletes claimed both gold and silver in the men’s 5,000M walk race, with Mabrouk Saleh Al Karbi winning gold in 24mins 21.75secs, while his teammate Issa Barshim (father of Qatari high jump star Mutaz) secured silver in 32:27.68sec. UAE’s Ayoub Sarouash won bronze in 34:13.80sec.
In high jump, Qatar’s world and Olympic champion Mutaz Issa Barshim shared gold with Oman’s Fatek Abdulghafour Bait Jaaboub after both athletes cleared 2.16M. Saudi Arabia’s Ahmed Al Tarouti claimed bronze.
In men’s 800M, Qatar won two medals as Hatem Hamida secured silver and Mubarak Abdi claimed bronze, while the UAE’s Ibrahim Al Dhafiri won gold.
Qatar’s Hamza Al Suwaidi earned silver in men’s shot put, while Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Tolo claimed gold and Bahrain’s Abdulrahman Mahmoud the bronze.
In men’s 3,000M steeplechase, Zakaria Ibrahim won gold for Qatar in 8:35.13, while teammate Yasser Salem Bougrab secured silver in 9:08.58.
Qatar also claimed gold in men’s pole vault through Saif Abdul Salam, while Saudi Arabia’s Hussein Al Hizam took silver and fellow Saudi athlete Mohammed Al Qadehi won bronze.
Qatar secured gold and bronze in women’s 100M hurdles as Sara Ali won gold in 13.87sec, while teammate Shahad Mohammed claimed bronze in 22.53sec. UAE’s Al Jazi Farhan earned silver in 16.21sec.
Maryam Al Saleh claimed bronze in women’s 800M, while Bahrain secured both gold and silver through Nelly Korir and Zainab Mohammed.
Dana Salem also secured bronze for Qatar in the women’s 100M, while Bahrain’s Raihana Gharouba won gold, and her compatriot Laila Kamal claimed silver.
In women’s long jump, Qatar’s Salma Hamed won bronze, while Oman’s Nozol Al Alawi secured gold and Kuwait’s Aisha Al Khudr took silver.
Qatar’s bowling team wins gold
Qatar’s bowling team won gold in the trio competition on the third day of the bowling events.
Qatar’s trio of Talal Al Marri, Badr Al Sada, and Jassim Al Marikhi secured first place with a total of 3,785 points collected over six games following strong competition against Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and Oman.
Saudi Arabia’s trio of Bandar Al Yabah, Ziyad Al Tuwairb, and Ahmed Abu Al Rish claimed silver (3,655pts), while Kuwait’s Aseel Al Roumi, Faisal Saleem, and Mustafa Al Mousawi claimed bronze (3,633pts).
Qatar boxers win two silver and a bronze
Qatar’s boxers achieved notable success, securing three medals, including two silver and one bronze. Mohammed Al Faqih won silver in the 55kg category after losing the final 4-1 to Saudi Arabia’s Muhannad Majrashi. Al Faqih had advanced to the final after defeating the UAE’s Sultan Abdullah 5-0 in the semi-finals.
Mohammed Lassad also secured silver in the 75kg category, following a 1-4 defeat to Bahrain’s Ali Abdullah in the final. Lassad reached the final after defeating Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Darkazanli 4-1 in the semis.
In the 60kg category, Youssef Al Sayed claimed bronze medal, while Saudi Arabia’s Ziyad Majrashi and Bahrain’s Omar Boudhahil won gold and silver respectively.
Qatar’s handball team begins campaign
Qatar’s senior handball team began their campaign with a 28-20 victory over the UAE at the Duhail Sports Hall. Qatar took a narrow 13-12 lead at half-time and them built on it to emerge as victorious.
