American voters continued casting their ballots Tuesday in the congressional midterm elections, amid an intense contest between the Republican and Democratic parties for control of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. The elections are seen as an important test of President Donald J. Trump's administration halfway through his second term.
The elections cover all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 seats in the U.S. Senate, in addition to gubernatorial elections in 36 states, several local offices and state-level referendums.
More than 59 million Americans had cast their ballots early before polling locations opened today, according to data from the UF Election Lab.
Attention is focused particularly on the contest for control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress, which are currently controlled by Republicans. Democrats are seeking to capture a majority in one or both chambers, which could directly affect the Trump administration's ability to advance its legislative agenda during the remainder of his term.
Concluding his campaign to mobilise Republican voters, President Donald J. Trump described the midterms as "the most important midterm election", calling on his supporters to vote and stressing the need to keep Congress strong.
Trump noted the difficulty usually faced by the president's party in midterm elections, saying: "For some reason, the sitting president doesn't win the midterms, but we made an extremely strong effort."
In a message aimed at mobilising his electoral base, Trump said that if his supporters voted, Republicans "will win by a landslide".
The U.S. Senate elections feature prominent contests in several states, including Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Texas and Alaska. These states are the focus of attention in the battle for the Senate majority.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, this year's elections are being held under an electoral map that differs noticeably from the one used in 2024, after approximately one-third of congressional districts were redrawn to varying degrees during the current cycle.
Regarding the conduct of voting, reports indicated that some technical problems had emerged at a limited number of polling locations. Officials in Fulton County, Georgia, announced two separate problems involving voting equipment at two locations, while ballot-scanner malfunctions were reported in Westchester County, New York, as voting began.
The elections are taking place amid widespread focus on economic issues and the cost of living, alongside other issues that formed major themes of the election campaign. The results represent a test of the political balance of power ahead of the final two years of President Trump's term.
Polling locations are scheduled to begin closing successively this evening according to each state's local time, after which vote counting and the announcement of official results in the various contests will begin.
