MoPH recalls all shipments of Ferinject 50 mg/mL

Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health has announced the recall of all shipments of Ferinject 50 mg/mL following laboratory testing of the medicine.

According to the Ministry, tests conducted by its laboratories found that the product did not comply with the manufacturer’s stated chemical specifications.

The recall applies to all shipments identified by the Ministry rather than a single specified batch.

What is Ferinject?

Ferinject is an intravenous medicine containing ferric carboxymaltose.

It is used to treat iron deficiency in patients where oral iron preparations are ineffective or cannot be used, or when there is a clinical need to replenish iron rapidly.

Each millilitre contains ferric carboxymaltose corresponding to 50 mg of iron.

Why has it been recalled?

The Ministry said the decision followed tests carried out by its laboratories.

According to the official recall notice, the product was found to be non-compliant with the manufacturer’s stated chemical specifications.

The Ministry has not, in the notice issued, identified a particular chemical component, test parameter or specific batch responsible for the non-compliance.

It has also not stated in the published notice that patients have suffered adverse reactions linked to the issue.
