Qatar Affirms Right To Development As Fundamental Human Right

Qatar has affirmed that the right to development is a fundamental human right, 40 years after the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development in 1986.

The statement was delivered by Abdulrahman Mohammed Fakhro, Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, during a Human Rights Council panel discussion on the right to development.

Qatar said the principles and standards set out in the declaration remain central to addressing many of the challenges facing the world. It stressed that advancing this right should remain an international and national priority as countries implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

Fakhro highlighted Qatar National Vision 2030 and the national development strategies used to implement it, saying they have contributed to important national achievements and progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

He also highlighted Qatar’s international efforts to promote cooperation and solidarity, including hosting the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in March 2023 and the Second World Summit for Social Development in November 2025.

Qatar said its international solidarity efforts include supporting countries affected by disasters, conflicts and climate change, as well as investing in quality education and implementing development programmes and initiatives with international partners.
