Dr Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of diplomacy, regional cooperation, and the growing role of middle powers in addressing regional and global challenges during two discussions on the sidelines of the annual London Conference organised by Chatham House.

Dr Al Ansari participated in a panel discussion titled ‘The New Geopolitics of the Middle East’ and a roundtable discussion on middle powers and the reshaping of the global order.

During the panel discussion, he said the Middle East was not experiencing a temporary crisis but rather a continuation of successive cycles of escalation, adding that the region was undergoing an unprecedented period of instability affecting most of its countries.

He stressed the need to pursue comprehensive diplomatic solutions rather than continue managing recurring crises.

Dr Al Ansari said that, despite being directly affected by the conflict in the region, Qatar continues to play its role as a mediator out of its conviction that military solutions cannot achieve lasting stability and that diplomacy remains the only viable path to resolving conflicts and achieving regional peace and stability.

He warned that continued escalation would produce no gains for any party, stressing that all countries in the region would bear the security and economic costs of conflict, including its impact on energy security, supply chains, and international trade.

He also called for reviving the diplomatic process and creating the conditions for sustainable political settlements that would promote economic integration and rebuild trust among the region’s countries.

During the roundtable discussion, Dr. Al Ansari highlighted the transformations taking place in the international system and pointed to the growing role of middle powers in promoting regional and international stability amid the challenges posed by competition among major powers.

He also discussed lessons drawn from recent regional developments, emphasising the importance of diplomacy, regional coordination, partnerships, and cooperation in managing crises and strengthening security and stability.

He added that current global developments require a more comprehensive approach to strategic autonomy, including strengthening the capacity to address challenges related to security, defence, energy, and supply chains, contributing to the development of a more cooperative and effective international order.

Dr Al Ansari said lasting stability in the Middle East requires respect for state sovereignty, stronger collective action, and reaffirming diplomacy as the most effective means of resolving crises and building a more stable future for the region.
