Qatar has welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that it will mark the beginning of fruitful negotiations that can help end tensions and strengthen regional stability.

Speaking in Doha, Advisor to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Majed Al Ansari said a broad regional dialogue would be needed to rebuild trust and address changing security concerns in the aftermath of the war.

Al Ansari stressed that relations in the region cannot immediately return to “business as usual”, saying there remains a significant need for dialogue and agreements to guarantee regional security.

He said key issues under discussion include regional security, non-aggression arrangements, the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme, missile-related concerns and the role of non-state armed groups. While expressing optimism, he cautioned that issues that have shaped the region for decades ‘will not be resolved in mere days.’

Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts, backing the Pakistani-led mediation initiative and praising Pakistan’s role in advancing negotiations. Al Ansari said Doha takes its responsibility toward regional security seriously and will remain engaged in efforts to prevent a return to escalation and restore stability in the region.

Addressing reports of a $300bn reconstruction framework for Iran, Al Ansari said no Qatari funds had been allocated or paid under any such arrangement and declined to comment on the reported figure.

US President Donald Trump had earlier dismissed reports about the amount as ‘fake news.’

Qatar also expressed hope that the agreement will help ensure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains open, allowing the country to continue supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries in need.

Al Ansari confirmed Qatar will be represented in Geneva on Friday for the formal signing of the MoU, highlighting Doha’s role as a key mediator in bringing the agreement to fruition.

Commenting on Gaza, Al Ansari said Qatar continues its mediation efforts to support the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement. He also noted reports that Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed almost 1,000 Palestinians since the ceasefire was agreed in October last year.
